CEA assay is to be used as an aid in the prognosis and management of cancer patients in whom changing concentrations of CEA are observed. A persistently rising CEA value may be associated with progressive malignant disease and a poor therapeutic response. Clinical relevance of the CEA assay has been shown in the follow-up management of patients with colorectal, gastric, breast, lung, prostatic, pancreatic and ovarian carcinoma. CEA assay is not recommended as a screening procedure to detect cancer in general population.
