HBsAg assay is to perform qualitative detection of hepatitis B surface antigen in acute or chronic viral infection and determination of chronic hepatitis B infection status in human serum or plasma. HBsAg is the first serological marker after infection with HBV appearing one to ten weeks after exposure and two to eight weeks before onset of clinical symptoms. HBsAg persists during this acute phase and clears late in the convalescence period. Failure to clear HBsAg within six months indicates a chronic HBsAg carrier state.
