CMV IgG assay is used to perform semi-quantitative determination of IgG antibodies to Cytomegalovirus in human serum and plasma. A positive CMV IgG result in connection with high avidity result is a strong indicator of a past CMV infection and low risk for in utero transmission. The presence of CMV specific IgG antibody does not assure protection from disease. A substantial rise in anti-CMV IgG concentration in sequential samples taken from an individual accompanied by the presence of anti-CMV IgM could also indicate serological evidence of active infection.
